Riding a bike is two skills: balancing and pedaling. Balancing is the hard one. Training wheels teach pedaling while making balancing impossible; balance bikes do the reverse. That asymmetry decides the debate.

The mechanism, in plain English
A bicycle doesn't turn the way a shopping cart does. Above walking pace, a bike turns because the rider leans it into the corner and the front wheel automatically steers slightly into the fall to catch it — a tiny, constant series of corrections nobody can describe while doing it, and almost nobody can do consciously the first time either. It's a reflex, built by falling a little and catching yourself a little, thousands of times, at a scale small enough that the falls don't hurt. That's the entire value of a balance bike: it lets a two-year-old fall two inches instead of two feet while that reflex wires in. A tricycle or a bike with training wheels physically cannot lean, so it cannot teach this at all — not slowly, not eventually, not with more practice. The child pedaling with stabilisers on is building an entirely different, incompatible habit: steer the handlebars like a car's wheel, stay bolt upright, ignore lean altogether. When the stabilisers come off, the counter-steering reflex hasn't been half-built; it hasn't been started, and the car-steering habit now actively fights it.
Why training wheels backfire
A bike turns by leaning. Training wheels hold the bike upright, so the child learns to steer like a car — turn the bars, stay vertical. When the wheels come off, that habit is exactly wrong, which is why the removal day is famously tearful. The child isn't learning to ride; they're un-learning two years of practice.
What months 1–6 actually look like
The realistic timeline is where a balance bike's advantage shows up hardest, because the two paths don't even look similar. Month 1 on a balance bike is mostly walking while straddling it, feet flat, seat barely taking weight — not glamorous, but it's building comfort and steering feel. By month 2–3, strides lengthen and the seat starts taking real weight between steps. Somewhere around month 3–6 — sometimes sooner, sometimes later, and both are normal — both feet come up for a few seconds at a time: the glide. Training wheels run a different clock entirely: a child can pedal competently within days, but that's the easy skill. The stabilisers typically stay on for a year or two of otherwise normal riding, and the actual balance-learning phase only starts on the day they come off — which is when the tears and the running-alongside-holding-the-seat routine usually begins, often at age 5 or 6 rather than 3 or 4.
The fair case for training wheels
They're not useless. For a child starting late (5+) on a bike that's already pedal-equipped, a few weeks of stabilisers can build pedaling stamina. And for some children with motor-skill or vestibular differences, a fixed-upright bike is the accessible option — talk to your OT. For typically developing toddlers, though, the balance bike wins on every measure we can find. The social pressure problem
Here's the part the spec sheet doesn't cover: at the playground, a 3-year-old wobbling around on a low balance bike can look, to another parent, like the kid who's "behind," while the training-wheel kid pedaling confidently looks ahead. It's the opposite of the truth, and it's worth saying to your own kid, plainly, if they notice: "Your bike is teaching you the hard part first — theirs is coming later." If you're starting later than most of the families around you — a 4-year-old just getting their first balance bike, say, while peers already have geared bikes with stabilisers — skip the temptation to jump straight to a pedal bike with training wheels to "catch up." A late starter on a well-sized balance bike (check the range in the sizing guide) typically closes the gap within one season, because older kids also glide faster than toddlers do. Frame it to the child as a different bike, not a lesser one, and keep sessions short enough to stay fun; comparison to peers fades quickly once gliding starts to click.
What to do instead
- Start a balance bike at 18–24 months (when to start).
- Let gliding develop over 6–18 months (the progression).
- Move straight to a light pedal bike, no stabilisers (the transition, the bikes, or the wider field in best balance bikes if you're still shopping).

Common questions
My child already rides fine with training wheels — should I take them off and start over with a balance bike?
Usually not worth the disruption if they're happy and progressing. The stronger move is to skip the stabiliser stage for any younger sibling rather than reverse course for a child who's already comfortable; forcing a switch mid-stride can feel like a step backward to the child even if it isn't one.
Is there a middle ground, like training wheels that let the bike lean a little?
Some newer stabiliser designs use springs or a slight pivot to allow a bit of lean, and they're a genuine improvement over the rigid kind. They still don't require active balancing the way a balance bike does, so treat them as a softer version of the same trade-off, not a substitute for one.
What if my child is scared of the balance bike tipping?
That's normal and it's the entire point — a little instability at a low, safe height is what builds the reflex. Lower the seat so both feet sit flat with a slight knee bend, stay on soft grass or carpet for the first sessions, and let them push the bike around like a toy before ever expecting a glide. Confidence comes from repetition at a height where falls don't hurt, not from a stiller bike.
